Catwelfare Week Launch

To celebrate the launch of national Cat Welfare Week, Old Spitalfields Market in London played host to the UK’s first public Cat Nap on Monday 23 November. Busy office workers and local cat lovers came together to enjoy a restful 10 minutes on the 100 square metre cosy cat nap bed in return for a small donation to Cats Protection.

Cat Welfare Week, which runs from 23 – 29th November, is dedicated to raising awareness of the factors that may cause harm or distress to cats through physical, mental or environmental changes. By highlighting issues such as feline stress, the initiative hopes to remind owners what actions and traits are normal feline behaviour and which could be the symptoms of something more worrying.

The event was sponsored by Feliway and run in conjunction with leading cat charity, Cats Protection. Juliet Penaliggon from CEVA Animal Health, manufacturer of Feliway, felt that the cat nap was a light-hearted approach to a serious subject:

“This is the first time we’ve run Cat Welfare Week in the UK and we wanted to create a fun and interactive way for people to show their support. We want to encourage people to think more seriously about their cat’s needs and to ask for help if they are concerned. By having a cat nap we gave people the perfect chance to reflect!”

One of the event participants, remarked:

“Taking a nap in the day isn’t really a big ask for a good cause and I was happy to take time out at lunchtime to show my support.”

Those unable to join in the fun at Old Spitalfields Market were invited to join in at home, school or even in the office by indulging in a sneaky cat nap in return for a charitable donation of £1 to help Cats Protection find new homes for thousands of unwanted and abandoned cats across the country.
